Girls State

Girls State, an American Legion Auxiliary program, is an amazing week of learning about responsible citizenship, leadership, and government.  Participants in the program elect officials for all levels of state government and actively administer a mock government.

Female high school students completing their junior year are selected through an application review and an interview process. One candidate is selected and sponsored by AAUW North Tahoe and the South Shore branch of the California American Legion Auxiliary for this week-long, summer program, exploring and practicing the political process.

The women’s branch of the American Legion Auxiliary has sponsored and organized the Girls State program since 1937.  This program for young women is in line with AAUW’s mission, “To advance equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.”
